Consejos para aprender inglés 03: Sea un estudiante práctico

En los anteriores consejos se ha indicado que para aprender una nueva lengua es necesario tener confianza en sí mismo y adoptar una actitud positiva. Una tercera indicación importante en este sentido se refiere a la conveniencia de ser un estudiante práctico.

Aprender por uno mismo, en el propio país, una lengua distinta de la materna no siempre resulta fácil: falta, por ejemplo, el estímulo de unos compañeros de clase, y, además, no son muy frecuentes las oportunidades de practicar con hablantes nativos, ni, desde luego, de encontrarse inmerso en la lengua como si se estuviera en el país en que se habla.

Sin embargo, esta fórmula de aprendizaje personal presenta la ventaja de permitir que el trabajo se desarrolle a un ritmo propio. En esta tarea, es conveniente la puesta en práctica de unos métodos de estudio eficaces. Directrices tan sencillas como las siguientes pueden resultarle de gran ayuda:

- Estudie regularmente y con cierta frecuencia durante periodos de tiempo cortos. Se retiene mucho mejor lo que se ha aprendido trabajando un poco cada día que intentando avanzar mucho de una sola vez.
- No deje de revisar lo visto anteriormente al mismo tiempo que avanza. Para ello, estudie los resúmenes de sus notas o del curso que esté realizando. Aún así, de vez en cuando, repase las unidades anteriores del curso que esté realizando para asegurarse de que todo lo visto en ellas le resulta familiar.
- Siempre que le sea posible, estudie en un lugar tranquilo, a una hora del día en que esté relajado -¡no medio dormido!-, y guarde el texto, los audios y/o videos y su cuaderno de notas en el mismo sitio.
- Estudie para adquirir hábitos: repita las palabras y las frases hasta que pueda decirlas automáticamente. También, cuando se le presente la oportunidad de hablar en inglés con alguien, practique lo que ha aprendido.

A medida que avance en el curso que está haciendo, comprobará cómo aumentan su conocimiento del inglés y su confianza en sí mismo a la hora de utilizarlo.

Consejos para aprender inglés 02: Mantenga una actitud positiva

Anteriormente se comentaba que para aprender una nueva lengua es necesario tener confianza en sí mismo. Otra indicación importante en este sentido se refiere a la conveniencia de adoptar una actitud positiva. Aquí expondremos algunas ideas sobre esta cuestión.

Aprender otro idioma no es una tarea tan dura como con frecuencia se cree, antes bien, puede resultar incluso una actividad divertida. Al principio parece imposible abarcar todos los elementos de la nueva lengua: el vocabulario, as estructuras gramaticales, la pronunciación, la ortografía, la comprensión de la lengua hablada y escrita, etc. Pero recuerde que todo esto ya lo ha asimilado con éxito al menos en una ocasión: cuando aprendió su propia lengua.

Mucha gente querría que hubiera una manera mágica de aprender un idioma, por ejemplo, con una píldora o con una sesión de hipnosis. Por desgracia, no disponemos de tales métodos de aprendizaje instantáneo y, por lo tanto, no se puede conocer una nueva lengua de la noche a la mañana, pero si puede hacerse con un pequeño esfuerzo y practicando de manera regular.

El conocido novelista británico Anthony Burgués, famoso en todo el mundo por A Clockwork Orange (La Naranja Mecánica), fue profesor de lengua y literatura inglesas antes de convertirse en escritor profesional. En su libro Lenguaje Made Plain, de 1964, sugería que en las primeras etapas del aprendizaje de una nueva lengua los alumnos habrían de ser capaces de hablar un poco y entender mucho.

Consejos para aprender inglés 01: Tenga confianza en sí mismo

Para aprender una nueva lengua se requiere tener confianza en si mismo tal vez el principal impedimento para disfrutar el aprendizaje del inglés (o de cualquier otra lengua) y hacer progresos en ella sea el miedo a cometer errores. Tendemos a pensar que, si somos principiantes en el uso de un idioma, los que la lo hablan se impacientarán, se molestarán por nuestras equivocaciones o pensarán que somos menos inteligentes de lo que realmente somos. Es muy importante dejar de lado tales inhibiciones y atreverse a hablar prácticamente desde el principio, aunque sólo se conozcan unas pocas palabras y expresiones.

No se preocupe si comete errores. Todo el mundo los comete, incluso personas que llevan mucho tiempo estudiando una lengua extranjera. Lo importante es conseguir que le entiendan. Recuerde que si está hablando en inglés con alguien que no es nativo, puede que el también sea un principiante. Y si está hablando con un nativo, su satisfacción por el hecho de que usted le hable en inglés a menudo le hará olvidar los errores que usted cometa.

En inglés existen dos proverbios que pueden aplicarse a este caso:

Nothing ventured, nothing gained (Nada arriesgado, nada ganado)

Never put off till tomorrow what you can do today (no deja para mañana lo que pueda hacer hoy)

Acuérdese de ellos cuando le surja alguna dificultad. ¡No son mal consejo!
